I'm getting my first kitten in a few months. Any real tips to keep her happy and healthy?

Posted by admin

I know the feeding, watering, and litter box deal. I've been with cats my entire life. I just want to know how to keep her healthy and happy if any of you have any cool and helpful tips. Also, get rid of fear, keep her playful, etc. Thanks!

Well the first day you 'll get her just don't rush things.Leave her alone to decide what she wants and what she doesn't want to do.Some kittens are very social right from the beginning, others are scared and need time to get used to their new home.Pushing your new kitten to do something she doesn't want to do,like cuddle with you, will only resolve in her being even more scared.Give her the time she needs.Visiting the house she is now into will help her get used to you,so the transfer to your house will be easier for both of you.
Buy her a lot of toys to keep her busy the time you won't be home.In pet shops you will find a variety of toys for cats.Remember that not all cats like the same things,so just because something is a hit doesn't mean your car will like it too,for example my cat is scared of mice you wind up,he hates it when he sees them moving in circles, lol.
Deside now where you want her to go and where you don't.It's very hard to teach them what they can and can't do when they are older and already used to doing it.Remember that if you don't want the cat to sleep with you in your bed you need to be firm and never allow her on your bed.Closing the door of your bedroom is the best solution.I started not letting my cat on my bed,let him there once after he was neutered cause I felt bad for him, well the damage was done,he is now almost 5 years old and I don't dare to close my bedroom door,he would tear it down in order to get in,lol!
Get her used on eating on specific times and don't give her any extras during the day.Twice daily is the best solution, give her some food at the morning when you wake up and some at night, before you start eating dinner. And NEVER give her to eat from the table…trust me on this one,you don't want a cat begging for food the whole time you eat.
Don't push your cat to be friendly with strangers if she doesn't want to.Some cats like the attention of others, others hate it and would prefer to be hidden 'till the "strangers" are gone.
Take her always to the vet for the vaccinations she needs and all your questions considering her health.Chip and spray her if you are planning to let her go outside.Love her and take good care of her. That's about it!Have fun with your new pet :)

Give her all of her shots(it can get pretty expensive!) and to keep her playful just buy her a few kittie tooys and play with her a lot. if she grows up like that than most likly she will stay that way.

Love! Kittens need lots of it! You need to make sure you have time to play with her and give her lots of attention, so that she will love you as much as you love her.
Good Luck with your new kitten!
p.s. you should name it Gracie if it's a girl

When I got my first kitten after I moved away from home, I bought him everything he needed before I brought him home, so that everything would be all set up and ready for him. His first toy was a "Super Scratcher", I got it at Wal*Mart for around 5 or 6 dollars. It was BY FAR the best investment I made for that cat! Kittens need to scratch things, and if they don't have toys of their own, your carpets and furniture will most likely pay the toll. My little guy just loves this toy!
Another thing, it's so cliche, but get her spayed – it might cost you a few more bucks than you want to pay, but fixed animals really are much happier and healthier!

    Have fun!

If you've been with cats your entire life, sounds like you already know the answer to this! Best bet, keep her inside at all times if possible – they really are better off and safer inside.

Getting a second kitty would give her a playmate and not make her so dependent on you – and they're fun to watch as they chase each other and play! My experience as the mom of 4 cats, pet her a lot, rub her ears, get her some soft small toys to play with – something she might think is a mouse that she can grab with her claws and carry in her mouth.

One of the best things I found that occupied lots of time when mine were kittens is tie a string from a chair or table leg, tie a scrunched up piece of paper at the end of it and make it long enough so she can reach it laying on her back on the floor. She'll bat that around for hours! My kitties all love playing in paper bags. Once she's in it, scratch your finger on the outside and she'll go crazy to get what's on the other side.

One of my other kitties loved to play with marbles – I used to live in a very old house with a slanted floor in the kitchen – he played with that marble for hours, batting it back and forth across the floor and watching it roll towards the center of the floor. It also works on a good floor – they love watching things roll around. Anything you can do that can imitate her "stalking" like she would do in the wild.

My kitties also like hiding between an open door and the wall and grabbing at whatever walks by on the outside of the door. There are a million ways to entertain them and have them entertain you!

    Have fun!

Keep her claws trimmed. Get a tall scratcher for her. Cats NEED to scratch. It needs to be tall enough that she can stretch when she scratches, and sturdy so it doesn't tip over. I think the best thing is to nail a strip of carpet to the wall or a door. When she scratches on anything inappropriate, tell her NO , and immediately carry her to her scratcher and rub her paws on it and talk softly…"Good Kitty, scratcher, scratcher!" Teach her the term "scratcher", or whatever you want to call it. That way if you catch her scratching the sofa, you can remind her of the scratcher and she will know what you are talking about. You must start traing immediately and stay on top of it. Please do not declaw. Research the subject first. It is best to have 2 cats rather than just one. Most cats need another cat to be really happy.

when you first get the cat. let him or her run around the house and get use to the place. dont constantly hold the kitten as it will not like this . best toy to get and I know it sounds funny buts its one of them laser pen lites. cats goes crazy over these things and you can shine it all over the house and not have to keep moving around the house. just dotn shine it in the cats eyes as it will casue blindness over time to direct exposier. plus its something you dont have to pick off the floor.

it will take a few days for the cat to get use to the new suroundings. so if she does nothign but hollar and sit in one spot. dont worry about it. just walk up to the cat and tell its alright and talk to her.. pick her up and hold her for a lil bit and place her back down. after while the cat will feel its safe and start getting use to the new house. other than that cats are loaner animals mostly. they will come when called sometimes but they will let you know if they dotn want to be held. unlike dogs that are sorry to say stupid dumb animals. come when you call them. obey you what ever you want them to do. cats are like kids they will do what they want to do and will make you meet them on their terms.
